They Matter… A Design Project

They Matter…

They Matter… Life Lessons from Everyday Heroes and Sheroes
Author Alvenia Rhea Albright
Designer Annerose Walz

During the summer of 2017 I had the privilege and joy to design and illustrate this book for my friend, Dr. Alvenia Rhea Albright as a fundraiser for her organization Rhea of Hope Foundation Inc

The book features ‘everyday’ people that influenced my friend’s life profoundly. She wanted the people she loved to be visible because they matter.
I was honored to highlight Alvenia’s messages with my pictures and design this colorful book. It was quite a challenge but a lot of fun to see this project come alive. Working at our book, I was touched by the stories of these people  and will never forget the interesting life lessons they tell.

The book They Matter… Life Lessons from Everyday Heroes and Sheroes features 25 testimonials written in dedication to Alvenia’s family, friends, colleagues, mentors and mentees and is illustrated with over 250 photographs. Beside personal pictures of the heroes and sheroes I included about 30 of my own pictures to highlight and emphasize the messages.

Alvenia launched the book at the annual Rhea of Hope Foundation Luncheon in October 2017. You can buy the book at their website, here.

Here is the Text from the back cover

“Do not ever let anyone make you feel like you don’t matter; or like you don’t have a place in our American story – because you do. And you have a right to be exactly who you are.”
– MICHELLE OBAMA, former First Lady

An emotional, sometimes riveting and often amusing collection of tributes capturing the life lessons experienced by everyday “heroes and sheroes” who will always matter.

Albright does an excellent job of listening and writing about the stories of those who have entered her space and been a part of her life journey. She harnesses the “critical lessons learned” from the stories of these lives. Through prose and poetry, Albright shares many life lessons in this collection of personal tributes. These leaders opened public, professional and career doors for many who would follow. They were some of the nations’ first in their chosen careers in the areas of business, education, entrepreneurship, government, healthcare and religion.

Albright and Walz have shown us how much these lives truly matter by capturing and expressing their essence in words, visual expression and beautiful design. Indeed, these “everyday heroes and sheroes” will uplift, inspire and impact the lives of all who are privileged to read this book of tributes.

Will you change to embrace these Life Lessons?

“CHANGE Agents we must all become, demonstrating new behaviors as we go –  Prepared and determined to work even harder, to seize the opportunity to Grow… But only those who learn from Life Lessons will actually, truly GROW!”   ‘The Challenge: Change’ by Alvenia Rhea Albright
