No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. -Hal Borland
Borland’s quote is a good and necessary reminder for me. This season will end as it does every year and then transform my world into a wonderful spring, full of color and new beginning. And I’m soo ready 🙂
February is the snow month here in the Midwest – and my worst month of the year. Don’t get me wrong – it truly looks nice when it snows. Looking out of my window, I watch the quiet downfall of the powdery flakes, and observe how the snow creates a beautiful clean landscapes, covering up the dirt and all the imperfections.
On the other side, it takes away all the color.
You probably noticed by now, I don’t like snow or winter. As a SNOW=Stuff-No-One-Wants-type of a passionate summer girl, I hate it when the temperature falls below 30°F and I feel trapped in the house.
Today, the Photography Winter Conference I wanted to attend was cancelled because of the snowstorm that is blowing outside. Big disappointment here.
To take my thoughts off the winter depression I felt coming, I decided to take some pictures:
Right now, our backyard is a congested traffic area: Neighbors’ kids going back and forth between their homes and the small sleighing hill behind our houses, and squirrels and birds are going crazy.
They don’t ‘stay home.’ Fortunately, they love my bird feeders and work as perfect photo models.

The blue jays love peanuts
The sparrows, finches and juncos like the grain mixtures
And the squirrels – they look so innocent, but they rob all the bird feeders they get into 🙂
And after the hard work, I now enjoy my own “white stuff” – a little whip cream mountain on top of my hot coffee, while watching the birds and squirrel still horse around.
What do you do when winter depression hits? Or do you enjoy the snow?
Let me know, in the comments …
I love your accronym for SNOW! I love how picturesque the snow makes the trees but other than that I could live without it too. The pictures that you captured of the bird, squirrels and nature shows us that life is precious in all forms.
Thank you, Monique.
Yes, it surly looked beautiful, but not for very long –
I’m glad we already had some sunny days and that I can smell spring 🙂
